On Tuesday, November 12th, the Aurora Foundation hosted its very first Artisan Meet-Up at the Aurora House, marking a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to support and empower local artisans in Sierra Leone. This event brought together a vibrant group of creators, who have contributed to the success of our Sweet Salone product line, all under one roof to reflect on the past year and look ahead to new opportunities and growth in 2025.
The meet-up was a unique opportunity for artisans from different disciplines to connect, share experiences, and discuss their work. Artisans from the Lumely Arts and Crafts Market, the Brama Town community of basket weavers, potters and students from the Lettie Stuart Pottery, came together to exchange ideas and insights. Joining the conversation were also Foday Thoronka, a skilled tailor, and Ibrahim Kallon, a country cloth weaver, who have been integral parts of the Sweet Salone collection.
The discussions were centered on the progress made throughout 2024 and the exciting possibilities for the coming year. The event allowed artisans to discuss challenges they faced, share successes, and brainstorm ways to collaborate more effectively in the future. There was a palpable sense of community, with everyone eager to strengthen their collective impact on both the local economy and the global appreciation for Sierra Leonean craftsmanship.
Moreover, the meet-up provided a valuable chance for the artisans to learn more about the other ongoing projects at the Aurora Foundation. Our team shared insights into various initiatives that are supporting local communities, including the variety of trainings offered under the Aurora Impact program. The artisans also got a sneak peek at some of the Foundation’s plans for 2025, including new workshops and training programs aimed at expanding skill sets and enhancing opportunities for growth.
The event also underscored the importance of networking in fostering innovation and sustainability within the artisan sector. By bringing together such a diverse and talented group, we hope to continue to create spaces where collaboration and mutual support thrive.
