Centre for puppet arts

21.05.10

The arts and culture centre for puppet arts was formally opened at Borgarnes yesterday in the old co-op buildings at Englendingavík by Brákarsund.  Puppets of all shapes and sizes can be found there.

Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, former president of Iceland, opened formally this great world of adventure and according to the organizers of the centre the opening was probably their greatest adventure.

Centre for puppet arts, the art and culture centre is an entrepreneurial project of the couple Bernd Ogrodnik puppeteer and Hildur Jónsdóttir general manager. The centre is on the one hand an interactive puppet museum and on the other hand a puppetry that has performances for children as well as adults.

Bernd’s puppets are the main attraction of the Centre for puppet arts and in the puppet museum there are many familiar personalities from performances of the National Theatre and Reykjavik City Theatre as well as the Akureyri Theatre Company.

Bernd’s puppets can also be seen in action on weekends when there are performances in the puppetry.

The town’s café is a fairyland as well where the emphasis is on wholesome refreshments for children.  In the attic above the café there is a playroom for children where they can create their own world of adventure with puppets and costumes.  It is also possible to sit and relax outdoors on warm days and from there it’s only a few steps to the shore where kids can play. And very close by is Bjössaróló which is a famous playground.

A visit to the Centre for Puppet Arts is a unique experience and a fun place for people of all ages to spend an enjoyable time together. Aurora Fund is proud to have had the opportunity to sponsor this exceptional project.
