The Growth Accelerator Programme Business Expo 2024: Empowering Women and Youth Entrepreneurs in Sierra Leone

On November 20th, 2024, the much-anticipated Growth Accelerator Programme Business Expo took place at the Family Kingdom Resort in Freetown, Sierra Leone, bringing together 18 women-led SMEs from this year’s Growth Accelerator Programme and 18 youth-led businesses from the previous cohort. This inspiring event highlighted the incredible strides made by local entrepreneurs, showcasing the power of innovation, resilience, and community support with the theme “We ignite: Fuelling Growth and inclusive Economies through youth and women enterprises”.

The event commenced at 9:30 AM with a powerful opening speech by Regina Bjanadottir, Executive Director of Aurora Foundation. In her remarks, Regina celebrated the achievements of the 18 women-led businesses, recognizing the impact of the programme on their growth and development. She also extended heartfelt gratitude to the partners and stakeholders who have been instrumental in the success of this transformative initiative.

Next, Fredrick Hans Ampiah, Resident Representative for the UNDP in Sierra Leone, took to the stage. Fredrick spoke passionately about the importance of programmes like the Growth Accelerator in driving economic value, particularly through the empowerment of women and youth. He emphasized the role of entrepreneurship in fostering sustainable development and creating opportunities for future generations.

Ms. Seraphine Wakana, UN Resident Coordinator in Sierra Leone, addressed the audience. Her speech underscored the critical role of local enterprises in achieving long-term development goals and the importance of partnerships in nurturing growth. She commended the participants for their resilience and vision.

The Chief Director for the Ministry of Trade, Mr. Emmanuel Billy Konjoh, followed with a powerful address highlighting the untapped potential for women entrepreneurs in Sierra Leone. His remarks focused on trade opportunities and how fostering a conducive environment for women-led businesses can have a lasting impact on the country’s economic landscape.

The morning session was further enriched by speeches and video testimonials from several SME owners, including representatives from Jalimi Farms, Adams Garden and Farms, and Women in Energy. Each speaker shared their personal journey, detailing the invaluable support they had received from the Growth Accelerator Programme and the technical assistance provided by Aurora Foundation. Their stories of growth and success were a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation.

The morning sessions concluded with a special cake-cutting ceremony organized by San-Faith, a standout participant from Cohort 1, who presented a unique cassava-based cake. The ceremony was attended by the Head of Office for UN Women, Setcheme Jeronime Mongbo. A notable addition was the speech from Turbo Solar Consultancy & General Services, an SME from Cohort 1, which also shared their experience and the valuable assistance they received throughout the programme.

After the opening session, the expo doors were opened to the public, offering an opportunity for networking and business engagement. The event was a vibrant celebration of entrepreneurship, with SMEs from various sectors, including agriculture, ICT, FMCG, energy, media, textile and garment showcasing their innovative products and services. The event not only provided valuable exposure to these businesses but also fostered connections and collaborations that will continue to drive economic growth and empowerment for years to come.
